Frequently Asked Vasectomy Questions
1What is a vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a procedure for permanent male contraception. It involves cutting or blocking the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra. This prevents sperm from reaching the semen ejaculated during sexual intercourse.
2How is a vasectomy performed?
The procedure is typically performed in a doctor's office or clinic, however Snip Trip delivers the procedure directly to you via a mobile medical clinic and Dr. Mike Holzer, a board certified urologist. The surgeon will use local anesthesia to numb the scrotum, and then a small incision is made to access the vas deferens. The tubes are either cut, sealed, or blocked to prevent the passage of sperm. The incision is then closed with small dissolvable stitches.
3Is a vasectomy reversible?
While vasectomy reversal is possible, it's not always successful, and the chances of success decrease over time. Therefore, it is considered a permanent form of contraception. Individuals considering a vasectomy should do so with the understanding that the procedure is intended to be irreversible.
4What should one expect during the recovery period?
Recovery is generally straightforward. Patients may experience mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the scrotal area. It's advisable to rest and avoid strenuous activities for a few days. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication can help manage any discomfort. Most men can return to work within a week.
5How soon after a vasectomy can sexual activity be resumed?
Patients are usually advised to abstain from sexual activity for about 5 to 7 days after the procedure. However, it's essential to follow the specific guidelines provided by the healthcare provider. It's important to note that while the procedure prevents pregnancy, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
6Are there potential complications or risks associated with vasectomy?
While vasectomy is a relatively safe procedure, as with any procedure, there are potential risks. These may include infection, bleeding, and the formation of sperm granulomas (a lump that can develop at the site of the cut vas deferens). Complications are rare, and the majority of men experience no long-term issues.
7How soon after a vasectomy can one rely on it for contraception?
Vasectomy failures are very rare. Less than one percent of vasectomies fail. Make sure to do a post-vasectomy semen check to ensure your procedure was successful.
8Does insurance pay for my vasectomy?
Maybe. Some insurance plans cover vasectomies; some do not. Most commercial insurances have a cash deductible that has to be met before paying for medical care, so many men have to pay for their vasectomy even with insurance. Snip Trip offers payment options, but does not contract with medical insurance plans. You may be able to get reimbursed by personally submitting your own claim with your insurance carrier, but this is up to your specific insurance plan benefits and regulations.
9Can I use HSA or FSA funds to pay for my vasectomy?
Typically, yes! Please check with your HSA or FSA plan to confirm.
10How can one decide if a vasectomy is the right choice for them?
Deciding on a vasectomy is a personal choice that should involve careful consideration and discussion with a healthcare provider. Factors to consider include age, relationship status, desire for future children, and overall health. Counseling may also be available to ensure that individuals fully understand the permanence of the procedure.
It's crucial for individuals to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to discuss their specific situation, get accurate information, and make an informed decision based on their personal circumstances.
